After she had left Van Hect sat on the easy chair in his bedroom, thinking hard. Things were not going at all well here in the city of Loadz. The population refused to be subjugated and until they were crushed under the Nazi boot use of the industrial resources could not begin. The problem was all available troops were needed for the invasion of Russia. Berlin was breathing down their necks demanding a solution and Van Hect knew as well as anyone that unless they came up with one and fast it would be their necks in the guillotine before the year was out.

Colonel Cornelius Pound looked out of his office window at the sun setting over London. It had been a fine late summer day and it was hard to believe that just across the English Channel the entire continent was engulfed in a terrible war the like of which had never been seen before. Hard to believe too that it was less than a year since the Blitz. The bombed out buildings were everywhere. Cornelius wondered whether they were ever going to get to rebuild. Cornelius was still a young man at just thirty-four but had been wounded during the battle for France the previous year and as a result wore an eye patch and walked with a slight limp. He did not so much mind the scars of battle, what mattered to him more was that he was no longer able to fight. Still, he possessed an ability that could not be ignored and it was for this reason he had been assigned to head up a special department within the Ministry dedicated to aiding the resistance movement in Kinkislavia.

Cornelius turned around to face his team of three men and one woman. His eyes were immediately drawn to Rhonda Jenkins, his secretary and special agent. She was tall and blonde with hair cut just below her shoulders and clear blue eyes, lips that made a perfect pout. She had a determined chin and was strikingly handsome. He face somehow seemed to emanate strength and courage. To simply lay eyes upon her was to be reassured. Provided the two of you were friends. It was difficult for a woman to rise as high as she but Rhonda possessed an ability which could not be ignored. Cornelius could not take his eyes away from her. He shook his head. He needed to think clearly. A lot of people were depending upon him. “And so to business,” he said primly. “As we all know the city of Loadz is at this point the only major settlement in Kinkislavia currently offering any real resistance to the Nazi menace. What is more they are in control of an area of their city which is absolutely essential to the nation’s industry and it is no surprise the place features so strongly in the Nazis plans. Were they able to overrun the industrial sector and take control of the nation’s coal production it would prove essential in their thrust east.
